The courthouse draws a range of people, county employees who work in the building daily, attorneys and legal staff, members of the public there for specific purposes, and the occasional visitor navigating downtown on foot who encounters the trailer and decides their morning just got better.
What a Courthouse Morning Looks Like
The demographic at a courthouse pop-up is genuinely mixed in a way that few events produce. County employees start arriving early, consistent and regular, these are people with schedules and parking routines and coffee habits that a morning trailer can fit neatly into. Attorneys and legal professionals arrive in a more clustered pattern around the start of court sessions, they want something strong and they want it fast, because they have somewhere to be in twenty minutes. Members of the public arrive with more variability: some are there on time and relieved to find coffee available, some are stressed about whatever brought them there and a good cup of something is a genuine comfort.
Serving all three of those populations from the same trailer, in the same morning window, is an exercise in reading the room quickly. Common Tides has developed that skill across enough different event types that the courthouse setting, while unusual, was not a challenge.
Downtown Wilmington's Princess Street area has the density of a real urban civic center, county offices, legal services, financial institutions, and the retail and food that has grown up around the foot traffic those generate. A specialty coffee trailer on the street in that context is filling a gap that the surrounding environment creates: people who need good coffee before a long morning of civic obligations.
County Employees and What They Deserve
The people who work in county government, the clerks, administrators, assessors, planners, and public service workers who keep New Hanover County functioning, are public servants in the literal sense. They spend their working days managing the infrastructure of county life for the benefit of a population that largely interacts with that infrastructure only when something goes wrong or something needs documentation. The coffee they get on their way to work is typically whatever the break room provides or whatever they picked up at a drive-through on the way in.
Common Tides at the courthouse is, in a small but real way, an upgrade to that equation. A well-pulled double shot or oat milk latte from a properly calibrated espresso machine, made with good beans, is not the same category of experience as the break room option. The county employees who encountered the trailer on Princess Street and ordered from it were, for that morning, getting the same quality of coffee that someone eating at a specialty coffee shop in the more expensive parts of the city gets as a matter of routine.

Common Tides at the courthouse is part of that street-level texture, even if only for a morning at a time.
The two visits, May 19th and June 1st, were at different points in the spring and early summer calendar. May 19th was a dry spring day. June 1st was a morning with the early summer humidity beginning to arrive. The drinks ordered reflected that: more hot espresso in May, more iced lattes and iced espresso options by June. The trailer adapts. The location stays the same. The community is consistent.
